One Piece is a pirate story about Monkey D. Luffy, a young and ambitious pirate and the captain of the Straw Hats. Along with his diverse crew of allies and fellow pirates, Luffy sets on a mission to find the mystical treasure known as the One Piece.

The Height Differences in One Piece

One Piece has a distinctive animation style and character design, which makes it hard to tell how tall the characters are.

Fortunately for everyone who wants to know, a lot of this info is confirmed in the story. Some is also available in databases such as the One Piece Visual Dictionary.

For instance, Monkey D. Luffy’s height is different before and after the time skip occurs. So, up until the 14th season, the young pirate is 5’8” (172.7 cm) tall, but at the beginning of the 15th season, he grows up to be 5’8.5” (174 cm) tall.

His friend and one of the greatest swordsmen in the show, Roronoa Zoro, is introduced as a 5’10” (177.8 cm) tall boy. However, after the time skip, he stands at 5’11” (180.3 cm). Also, there are some characters like Nami whose heights don’t change at all. For example, she stays at 5’7” (170.2 cm) throughout the whole story.

In this list, you will meet some characters who are always tall, like Kaidou, who is a 23’3.5” (710 cm) tall pirate, and some who grow exponentially. An example of this is Franky, who grows five inches in the two years between seasons 14 and 15.

1. Monkey D. Luffy

In this world full of huge and fearsome pirates, Luffy is a rather short person. At the beginning of the show, he is 5’8” (172.7 cm) tall and then grows an inch after the time skip. So, between the 14th and 15th seasons, Luffy grew up to 5’8.5” (174 cm).

Luffy doesn’t let his height disadvantage him and proudly takes on the role of captain of the Straw Hats. Even though he is considered a criminal by the government and often finds himself in danger, Luffy is an optimist who uses his positive point of view to overcome anything in his path.

Luffy possesses the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit, which changes his appearance and allows him to attack and defend efficiently in a fight.

2. Roronoa Zoro

Zoro is slightly taller than Luffy at 5’10” (177.8 cm) before the time skip. However, after the 14th season, Zoro grows to 5’11” (180.3 cm) tall.

Zoro didn’t just grow in height, but he also imrpoved as a swordsman. We know that since the beginning of the show, Zoro was one of the most skilled sword-wielders. Because of the hard training he did in the two years before the time skip, he became an even greater one.

He is a serious character who likes to be efficient and professional. As a close friend and ally to Luffy, his personality complements Luffy’s carefree attitude, making the captain of the Straw Hats behave more seriously when needed.

Zoro is one of the characters who has not eaten a fruit. He is a proud swordsman who relies on his sword skills alone.

3. Nami

Nami’s height doesn’t change throughout the show. Standing at 5’7” (170.2 cm), her height is  average when compared to the other female characters and below average when compared to the other members of the Straw Hats crew.

The reason why Nami’s height stays the same is probably that in the beginning, she was introduced as an 18-year-old. However, her appearance changes, and after the time skip, some visible physical changes can be seen.

As the series progresses, Nami also matures as a person. Great growth can be seen in her knowledge, decision-making, and general behavior. A good example is how her hatred for the pirates changed and she later became a loyal member of Luffy’s crew.

The Rumble-Rumble fruit gives Nami the power to create and manipulate lightning, something she does with her signature weapon, the Clima-Tact.

4. Usopp

When we first meet Usopp, one of the show’s funniest characters, he is a 5’8.5” (174 cm) tall and skinny teenager. After the 14th season, he grows to be 5’9 (175.3 cm) tall. Usopp worked hard to gain strength and build muscle.

However, these physical changes didn’t affect his personality, so he remains that funny and cowardly boy who always tries to take the easy way out. As the show goes on, Usopp works on his pirate skills and slowly becomes a more confident and reliable pirate.

Like Zoro, Usopp hasn’t eaten from a Devil Fruit. However, he is a great marksman and a powerful slingshot user.

5. Sanji

In the first 14 seasons of the anime, the Straw Hats’ cook is 5’10” (177.8 cm) tall. At the beginning of the 15th season after the two-year time skip, Sanji grows a little and now stands at 5’11” (180.3 cm).

The change in height is not the only thing that affects Sanji’s appearance. He grows facial hair, which makes him look more mature. He also develops a more serious personality, which comes in handy when dealing with Luffy’s childish behaviors.

Sanji is a skilled fighter who uses the Black Leg Style to defeat many opponents. However, he doesn’t have a Devil Fruit yet.

6. Tony Tony Chopper

This cute and tiny reindeer with a human personality is one of the most adorable characters in the show and stands at 2’11” (88.9 cm). Unlike most of the characters, he doesn’t grow at all during the two years between season 14 and season 15. What’s worse for his appearance is the fact that he loses weight -– and now looks even smaller.

However, at 15 years old, he is the youngest among the Straw Hats and may still grow in the future. Or maybe he has reached the height limit of his species. We shall see.

Tony Tony Chopper is a reindeer who gained a human personality due to the powers of the Hito Hito no Mi fruit and can now also transform into part-human. He has a vast knowledge of medicine, so he serves as the Straw Hats’ doctor.

7. Nico Robin

Nico is one of the strongest female characters in the show and stands at 6’2” (188 cm), which is well above the female (and even male) average. In the story, Nico is introduced as a 28-year-old who has reached her maximum height before the time skip.

However, after the time skip, there is a noticeable difference in Nico’s appearance. She develops hourglass-type curves that are accentuated thanks to her choice of clothes.

Nico Robin has eaten from the Hana Hana no Mi fruit, a Devil Fruit that gives her the ability to create duplicates of her body parts.

8. Franky

“Iron Man” Franky is a huge person and a member of the Straw Hats who, during the first 14 seasons, is 7’5” (226.1 cm) tall. He grew the most after the time skip and now stands at a very impressive height of 7’10” (238.8 cm).

While he is the tallest character on this list so far, he may not seem like it when you see him for the first time due to the weird proportions of his body. He got his huge forearms and shoulders by patching injuries with cyborg elements.

Franky has the power of the Buki Buki no Mi fruit, which allows him to manipulate any part of his body into a weapon.

9. Brook

Before the time skip, the living skeleton Brook is the tallest member of the Straw Hats. He stands at an enormous 8’9” (266.7). Even as a skeleton, he grows to 9’1” (276.9 cm) after season 14.

After dying, Brook’s soul wanders before returning to his body, all thanks to the Yomi Yomi no Mi Devil Fruit. His main role in the crew is as the Straw Hats’ musician.

There are also flashback scenes in the anime where we see Brook in his human form. Even then, the musician was tall and skinny and had his recognizable fashion style.

10. Jinbe

It was mentioned that Brook was the tallest of the Straw Hats. However, that was until Jinbe, who stands at 9’11” (302.3 cm), joined Luffy’s pirate crew. Jinbe is a Fishman, so it’s natural for him to have a shark-like appearance and a more sizeable look.

Jinbe had a crew named the Sun Pirates. Apart from being their captain, he was a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. He has an intimidating and fearsome appearance and is also respected thanks to his personality.

After eating the Hie Hie No Mi fruit, Jinbe can control and create ice — a power not only useful in fights but for crossing oceans as well.

11. Nefertari Vivi

Vivi is a 16-year-old princess of the Arabasta Kingdom and another female character whose height doesn’t change after the time skip. Even though she remains 5’7” (170.2 cm), Vivi changes up her style.

Vivi is not a typical spoiled princess. She’s a kind person who loves to help and be like everyone else. Even if she grows up to have beautiful curves, Nami still keeps a more old-fashioned style in comparison with the other women of the Straw Hats.

After leaving Arabasta, Vivi eats the Daishou Daishou No Mi, a fruit that allows her to change her size.

12. Gol D. Roger

Since Gol D. Roger died before the events in One Piece, he is a character seen only at the show’s beginning. Here, Gol is 9’0” (274.4 cm) tall — a height that goes well with his power and strength.

Gol D. Roger may be one of the most iconic pirates of all time. He was known as the Pirate King and possessed the treasure known as the One Piece. He and his treasure are the reason for the beginning of the Golden Age of Pirates.

The best thing about Roger is that he achieved everything without having the power of a Devil Fruit.

13. Shanks

Red-haired Shanks is one of the first characters introduced in the show. He appears in the scenes that take place a decade before the story’s beginning, when he is 6’6.5” (199.4 cm) tall. And since he is a grown man, Shanks doesn’t get any taller.

Shanks is one of the strongest characters in One Piece and is a part of the Four Emperors. Because he is a pure human and not a hybrid, he’s the shortest member. However, he is most certainly not the weakest one.

Shanks is Luffy’s idol and the reason the young boy became the ambitious pirate he is now. When the pair got separated, Shanks gave Luffy his iconic straw hat.

14. Kaidou

Kaidou, also known as the “Strongest Creature” in the world, is also a member of the Four Emperors. He is much bigger than Shanks and stands at 23’3.5” (710 cm). This gigantic pirate appears later in the show in season 17, when he is introduced as the general of the Beasts Pirates.

Kaidou has rather weird proportions. He has a huge body and muscles that don’t fit with his oddly small head. These body designs seem to be typical of this show and make it stand out from the rest.

Kaidou is a powerful beast who, with the powers of the Uo Uo no Mi fruit, can transform into a dragon.

15. Marshall D. Teach

Marshall D. Teach, most commonly known as Blackbeard, is one of the mightiest pirates in the show and a captain of the Blackbeard Pirates. While he stands at 11’3.5” (344.2 cm) throughout the whole season, his beard grows noticeably and gives him a more fearsome appearance.

Teach is a confident and proud pirate — probably because he is the only person in the One Piece universe with the power of two Devil Fruits: the Yami Yami no Mi and Gura Gura no Mi. Despite being that powerful and twice as tall as Luffy, the young Straw Hat isn’t afraid to confront him.

16. Bartholomew Kuma

With the Paw-Paw fruit he ate, Bartholomew Kuma is a “Paw-Human” who is a former member of the Revolutionary Army, the Seven Warlords of the Sea, and king of the Sorbet Kingdom. He is a huge man who stands at 22’7” (688.3 cm) and has a disproportionate body with short legs and arms that make him look silly.

Kuma is known for his usage of cybernetic components as additional parts of his body. Up until the 14th season, he already had a few. However, after the time skip, even if his height doesn’t change, we can see that Bartholomew added more swords and slave chains to help him look more frightening.

17. Trafalgar D. Water Law

Despite being introduced in the 11th season, Trafalgar becomes one of the main characters in One Piece and an important member of the Straw Hats. As for his height, he doesn’t grow any taller and stays at 6’3.5” (191.8 cm) throughout the series.

While not the tallest pirate among the other crew members in Luffy’s gang, Trafalgar’s relaxed and calm nature keeps him from being intimidated by the bigger members. He is also a teammate you can rely on in stressful and tense situations.

Trafalgar is a simple man who doesn’t change much after the time skip. Even his fashion style stays relatively the same, with the only difference being that he wears a blue and orange hoodie instead of a yellow and black one.

Trafalgar wields the power of the Ope Ope no Mi fruit, which allows him to create an area where he is in absolute control of everything.

18. Portgas D. Ace

Ace is the son of the mighty Gol D. Roger and a main supporting character. He is of average height and stands at 6’1” (185.4 cm) up until the 14th season, when he is sadly executed.

Ace was Luffy’s sworn brother. Although they were not biologically related, the pair shared a lot of similarities as they were both funny, optimistic, and positive. One could say that Ace was an older and more muscular version of Luffy.

Ace ate the Mera Mera no Mi fruit and has the power to create and manipulate fire. In honor of his sworn brother, Sabo did the “Fire Fist” right after eating the fruit.

19. Sabo

Sabo is a character only seen in flashbacks at first, where he is about 3’3.5” (100.3 cm) tall. However, Sabo is later reintroduced in the 17th season as a man who stands at 6’1.5” (186.7 cm).

Sabo is a member of the Revolutionary Army and, most importantly, Luffy and Ace’s sworn brother. After a series of events, he loses his memory and regains it after ten years while reading the news about Ace’s death. Sabo is a compassionate person and a good brother who pushes Luffy to fulfill his potential.

Sabo is the second person to have the power of the Mera Mera no Mi fruit.

20. Koby

Koby is another character in One Piece whose height doesn’t change at all, as he remains a 5’6” (167.6 cm) tall boy throughout the story. However, Koby’s physical appearance and personality change.

In the beginning, he has a chubby body, but he puts in the hard work to gain muscle and shed the fat. After this change, he carries his ambitious personality in everything he does without letting his height bother him at all.

Koby is a Cloud Human who possesses the Kumo Kumo no Mi. This Devil Fruit gives him the power to create and manipulate clouds however he wants.
