- Big or Small, Tall or Short, Luca is about Believing in Yourself
Luca‘s tiny cast managed to impact viewers significantly—and they’re still uncovering new details about the movie.
Luca Paguro, the protagonist of this coming-of-age story, is a shy sea monster who wants to know what it’s like to live on land with humans.
How Old Is Luca
The trio is completed with the addition of Giulia Marcovaldo, Luca’s other best friend, who is also thirteen years old and stands at the same height as him—5’1″ (154.9 cm).
Their adventures take them to beautiful places and teach Luca invaluable lessons about life, friendship, and understanding.
Luca was a shy and timid sea monster who secretly longed to experience life on the land with humans.
But doing so meant breaking the rules and venturing into the unknown, which scared him deeply. He knew he had to summon his courage if he were to succeed.
Thankfully, he had some loyal friends to support him on his mission. With their help, Luca slowly begins to explore the world above and discovers a surprising new side of himself he never knew existed.
Luca Paguro – November 20th
If Luca Paguro were a superhero, his superpower would be defying gravity!
Luca Paguro might be small in stature, standing at only five feet and one inch tall, but this doesn’t stop him from pursuing a thrilling journey of self-discovery.
At the tender age of 13 years old, Luca is shy and unsure compared to his peers—both human and otherwise. But when he meets Alberto, Luca’s life takes a drastic turn.
With Alberto by his side, they explore the human world, and Luca is encouraged to leave behind his worries to experience something completely new.
There are several points in the movie where Luca stands up for himself and those around him against threats, such as bullies older than him.
However, until Luca hurts Alberto, he doesn’t truly understand what it means to be brave. With the help of his newfound courage and confidence, Luca comes out of his shell and starts living life on his terms. It’s an inspiring story of self-discovery that will surely leave viewers feeling uplifted and inspired.
Luca Paguro is an inspiring character for fans of all ages, proving that no matter how small you may be, you have the power to make a difference.
With his courage and determination, Luca confronts his fears and pushes himself into new experiences—ultimately leading him to success in the end.
Alberto Scorfano – September 25th
In human or sea monster form, no one can stand up against 14-year-old Alberto Scorfano and his 5’4″ stature.
When Alberto detects trouble in the water, he knows precisely how to squash it—with confidence that towers over everyone else.
His 5’4″ stature isn’t all that makes him appear larger than life. He’s also an orphan sea monster with more experience on the surface than beneath it, giving him a unique perspective.
Despite having spent much of his life isolated from humans, Alberto fancies himself well-informed about their culture—so much so that he enthusiastically offers to be Luca’s tour guide as they explore together!
What follows isn’t just a newfound friendship between two unlikely pals. It is also an opportunity for Alberto to learn how to make new friends—and potentially family—that he never had before.
After forming bonds with each other and helping one another through tough challenges on their adventures on land, Alberto finds out just how wonderful friendship can indeed be. It’s something entirely new for this courageous young creature living between two worlds.
Giulia Marcovaldo – March 18th
13 years old & 5’1” feet tall: meet Giulia Marcovaldo, who has no time for scaly relatives!
Even though they both measure 5’1″, Giulia has a totally different outlook on life than Luca… you know why? Because she’s human!
Giulia and Luca may share some similarities, but they are worlds apart. However, Giulia and Luca share one thing in common: They are both considered weird in their communities.
For Giulia, this causes her to feel ostracized by her own kind (humans). So, she decides that taking part in the Portorosso Cup Race with friends Alberto and Luca may be her chance to be accepted back into society’s good graces.
You don’t want to mess with this guy: 16-year-old Ercole Visconti is intimidatingly tall at 5’8″. When is Ercole Visconti’s birthday? We’re not sure.
He is a towering figure at the intimidating age of 16, with lanky legs that make him appear even more imposing to the other children.
Flaunting his power and authority, it’s easy to see why Ercole Visconti is one of Luca’s antagonists.
Ercole was a boy possessed by his Portorosso Cup-winning reputation. And he’s too proud and narcissistic for anyone to handle.
But the megalomaniacal obsession didn’t stop there. He even exacted cruel punishment on Luca and Alberto, two young boys that were younger and weaker than him.
He wouldn’t leave them be until they bowed down before him, and he was not above risking their safety if it meant protecting his place as champion of the cup!
Ercole Visconti may be intimidating, but he’s not known for his intelligence or thoughtfulness.
He is a character driven by pride, ego, and power, making him an unpleasant antagonist in Luca.
Ultimately, Ercole seeks to maintain his status as the winner of the Portorosso Cup at all costs, even if it means putting others in danger.
Who needs Superman when you’ve got Massimo Marcovaldo?! The burliest and tallest character in Luca!
The tallest AND the strongest, our man Massimo Marcovaldo rocks fishing nets and tattoos with style.
Massimo Marcovaldo is undoubtedly the tallest and most muscular character to appear in Luca, standing at a towering 6″ (182.9 cm). We don’t know when his birthday is, but he’s definitely in his 40s.
Massimo is the embodiment of a classic Italian fisherman. He has tattoos and an impressive unruly mustache. However, these physical traits mask his inner kindness and understanding heart.
With only a few words to express himself, Massimo shows that actions speak louder than words. It’s no surprise then when he chooses mercy over animosity towards Luca and Alberto, and they are quickly accepted as family.
Especially when it involves Daniela Paguro, who goes from sea monster to standing tall at 5’8″ (172.7 cm) by the end of Luca! We don’t know Daniela’s birthday, but she’s around 35 years old.
Daniela is an overly cautious parent to Luca, warning him of the risks posed by humans and imposing a strict rule never to come close.
In Daniela’s underwater kingdom, her number one rule was that Luca should never go near the surface.
So, when he inevitably broke that rule and made some new friends in the process, she reacted swiftly with a strong arm, sending him deep into the ocean and out of reach of any potential human contact.
Even though her intentions were to protect him at all costs, unfortunately, this misguided decision caused more hurt than good for young Luca.
Lorenzo Paguro is 5’6″ on land and “sea-riously” tall underwater. He’s in his 40s, but his birthday was never revealed.
Lorenzo, the Sea Monster, may not be as tall as his wife, but he sure knows how to make waves. Or should I say tsunamis?
Despite being a loving Father, Lorenzo tends to become quickly distracted. This means he doesn’t always keep the most eagle-eye watch over Luca—unlike his wife, Daniela, who is much more protective.
Though he was concerned after the first time he was warned, and he promised when Luca wandered off that there would be no excursions on the surface again!
Who said it takes more than one muscleman to keep things in order? Not Ciccio! #OneLittleGuyCanDoItAll
Ciccio is one of Ercole’s most devoted allies. Standing 5″ (152.4 cm) tall, he’s an intimidating nugget despite being the shortest character in Luca. Just like Guido, his stature implies immense power and strength. At 13 years old, he’s the same age as Luca and Giulia too. We don’t know when Ciccio turned 13, so he might be a bit older or younger than Luca.
Despite Ercole’s lack of appreciation for his loyalty, Ciccio stands firm in his beliefs and never wavers.
Ciccio had to witness Ercole almost take the lives of Luca and Alberto before finally realizing how self-centered, heartless, and just-plain-terrible Ercole truly is.
I may not be able to read minds, but I can tell that Ciccio won’t fall for Ercole’s tricks again.
Ciccio’s naivety shattered, and he grew much more confident in the absence of Ecole’s mistreatment.
This dynamic duo of two thirteen-year-olds proves that it doesn’t always pay off when you look up to someone older than you!
Best friends Guido & Ciccio strive to impress their hero Ercole.
In return for admiration, however, comes mistreatment. Guido accepts Ercole’s abuse until it goes too far. He’s pushed over the edge when Ercole attempts to murder Luca and Alberto—who are only brought back by quick-thinking action from our hero!
At 13 years old, Guido is 5’1″ tall, making him one inch taller than his best friend, Ciccio. He shares the same age as Guido, but we don’t know his birthday. Because he’s a bit taller, he may be a bit older than his buddy. His slender frame resembles Ercole’s and he even wears similar clothing to the cup winner—an homage to the boy he idolizes.
Daniela may worry, but Grandma will never stop encouraging Luca to push his boundaries and make those bold moves.
Grandma Paguro may seem like a relic of the past, but her age isn’t as advanced as you might think!
Taking on both sea monster and human forms throughout life has kept this deep-sea dweller looking youthful. Grandma stands 5 feet tall in human form, and while we’re not sure about her age or birthday, we know she’s in her 60s.
Grandma Paguro advocates for exploration and adventure, a trait not lost on Luca. Despite the worries of her daughter Daniela, Grandma boldly encourages him to explore far beyond what’s underneath the sea. She knows that he must step out of his comfort zone to experience something truly remarkable.
Uncle Ugo Paguro may be a sea monster, but that’s not the only thing that makes him strange! His angel fish-like appearance sets him apart ❤️ #UNCLEUGO
It’s unsure exactly how old or tall Ugo is, but one thing is certain—Ugo isn’t a kid anymore! He’s probably in his 40s, given that he’s Luca’s uncle.
Though their relationship may have had its ups and downs, deep down inside, Ugo loves Luca like a son and will always be there for him.
He stands out when compared to other monsters of Luca. He has an angel fish-like appearance that’s a bit scary! To make up for his terrifying look (which may have resulted from a near-death experience involving humans on the surface) Uncle Ugo puts on an amiable face.
To avoid such experiences again, he has chosen deep waters as far away from people as possible and agrees all creatures should stay home where they belong.
Despite their unique appearances, the characters of Luca are all connected through a web of relationships. Each character has something special to offer and proves that size—and age—is just a number!
The moral of the story? We can all learn from each other, whether young or old. So don’t be afraid to look up to someone and strive for greatness. Just be careful who you look up to (we’re talking to you, Guido and Ciccio!).
Luca is proof that age doesn’t define who you can become. It’s all about believing in yourself and reaching for what’s beyond the surface.
