Nana Anime: Watch Order

Nana Anime and Manga Series

Nana anime is a popular drama anime series about two girls in their 20’s living in Tokyo. These housemates couldn’t be more different, but they have one thing in common:

They’re both named Nana.

Nana is a 47-episode snapshot of what it’s like to come of age in Tokyo, surrounded by drama, romance, and a few interesting coincidences. There are also two Nana live-action movies and a few Nana recap episodes. What’s the best order to watch them?

Below, we’ll give you a quick look at Nana along with the release order and watch order for every episode and movie.

What is Nana Anime About?

  • Nana is a TV anime series that premiered in the spring of 2006.
  • It’s a mix of drama, romance, and slice-of-life genres.
  • The story is centered around two young women, both named Nana, who are actively pursuing new beginnings in the city of Tokyo.
  • While Nana Komatsu dreams of love and romance, Nana Osaki wants to triumph in her musical career.
  • Komatsu is a cheerful and friendly girl who dreams of romance, though she’s a bit naive.
  • Osaki, the loner punk vocalist, is ambitious, brave, and daring by contrast.
  • These two girls fatefully meet and end up living under the same roof.
  • As the two grow closer, they begin to support each other in their many struggles.
  • Thus began a tale about complex human relationships, driven by characters who feel very real and relatable.
  • Nana is based on the Manga series of the same title by Author and Artist Yazawa Ai.

Nana Release Order

All of the Nana movies and shows were released between 2005-2007.
Nana Anime Release Order:

  1. TV Series Nana (2006-2007)

How many episodes of nana are there?

The main TV anime series aired from the 5th of April 2006 until the 28th of March 2007. It only has one season, which consists of 47 episodes. Each episode is about 23 minutes long.

Most Nana fans recommend watching the series first.

  1. Nana Recaps (2006-2007)

These are a set of special episodes that aired during the main anime series. Each is 23 minutes long. They are:

  • Nana Episode 11.5: Junko’s Room
  • Nana Episode 21.5: Junko’s Room 2
  • Nana Episode 36.5: Junko’s Room 3

Watch these in between the corresponding episodes as you watch the Nana anime. For example: Watch “Nana Episode 11.5: Junko’s Room” right after you finish watching Episode 11 of Nana.

Or, if you binge-watch the series, you may not need to watch them, as the episodes recap what happened previously in the series.

Nana Live-Action Films Release

Order

Anime live-action movies aren’t typically well-received, but the Nana movies are quite good. Two live-action movies were released before the anime. These films are not related to the anime—both are independent adaptations of the same source material (the Nana manga).

  1. Nana (2005) (Live Action)

Most fans watch the live-action movies after finishing the anime series. Start with the 2005 movie.

  1. Nana 2 (2006) (Live Action)

The final piece to watch is the second movie. With this, you’ll have watched every Nana adaptation.

Nana Watch Order

The Nana watch order is not necessarily the same as the release order. The live-action movies came before the anime, but they are generally watched after the anime. This is because the anime is much longer and more complex. The movies serve as a kind of bonus for anime fans. However, if you’re not into anime, then it’s better to start with the movies.

While you can watch the movies or anime first, we recommend this Nana anime watch order:

  1. Nana anime: 47 episodes
  2. Nana recaps: 3 episodes (watch during or after the series)
  3. Nana (2005) live-action movie
  4. Nana 2 (2006) live-action movie

Where to Watch & Stream Nana Anime

Your go-to website to stream Nana Anime is Amazon Prime Video. If you already have an Amazon subscription, get right to it.

Additionally, the anime series is set to return in full HD format thanks to Sentai Filmworks acquiring the license. It will be released in select digital outlets and followed by home video.

Where to Watch Nana with Subtitles

If you love watching anime with original Japanese audio and English subtitles, Amazon has you covered. They only provide Nana with subtitles.

Where to Watch Nana dubbed

If you prefer the dubbed Nana anime (without subtitles), head to Hulu or HIDIVE to watch the whole series in English (and a few other languages).

How Long Does it Take to Watch Nana?

  • It takes roughly 19 hours and 10 minutes to finish the entire 47-episode season of the Nana anime.
  • If you include the special episodes, you will need an additional 69 minutes.
  • Watching both live-action movies will take you 228 minutes (3 hours and 48 minutes).

So, if you are a Nana completist, it will take you just over 24 hours to watch everything in the Nana-verse.

Conclusion

Because there is only one season, this anime isn’t a hassle to watch. If you’re short on time, the main anime series is a great choice, as each episode is just over 20 minutes long. And there’s plenty of drama and heart packed into each episode.

Even better, the conclusion of the series is quite satisfying. Unlike so many other anime, you won’t have to deal with any annoying cliffhangers—even if there are avenues left open to continue exploring the world of Nana in the future.

Many fans eagerly await news about new installments of the series. It’s been over a decade since the last episode aired, but who knows? We may still see a new Nana series someday.

What are you waiting for? Head to Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, or HIDIVE right now and start enjoying the colorful world of Nana anime!
